The Significance of the FOUR Blood Moons of 2014-2015

On this Good Friday 2014, I want to address the spiritual significance of the Four Blood Moons of 2014-2015. It was the Magi in the Gospel of Matthew who read the signs in the heavens and saw the hand of God on earth in their generation. Similarly, in our generation the signs in the heaven must guide us to see the hand of the Lord in our generation. So on this Good Friday you can take comfort that through the Cross, the Christ has prepared an Ark of Heavenly Peace and Protection for those who take refuge in Him by faith (John 3:16).

I watched this Lunar Eclipse take place about 4am on Tuesday April-15-2014...It was amazing!
BTW, it was cloudy in Boston and the moon was hidden...and I did what any normal 21st century engineer would do...I watched CNN Live on my IPad :-)

There was a total lunar eclipse. The moon appeared reddish-orange in color, a phenomenon known as “Blood Moon.” The intriguing color is the result of the moon passing through the earth’s shadow. In fact, the April-15-2014 blood moon is merely the first of four additional blood moons within the next year and a half: April 15, 2014; October 8, 2014; April 4, 2015, and September 28, 2015. This close interval frequency is a very rare event. In fact, before the 20th century, there was a 300-year period when there were no such eclipses. In the words of NASA, “getting four umbral eclipses in a row is like drawing a rare lunar poker hand of four of a kind.”

What causes the Red Moon? When the EARTH passes between the SUN and a full MOON, blocking the sun's light, and causing a shadow on the moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. Often during a total lunar eclipse, the moon is not completely dark, but is faintly illuminated with a red light refracted by the earth's atmosphere which filters out the blue rays. In modern times, a higher density of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere contributes to a spectacular RED moon.

What does the Biblical tradition have to say about blood moons?

Well, many Bible prophecies refer to signs in the heavens. The sun, moon and stars are the actors. Jesus and many of the prophets spoke of the moon turning to blood, the sun being darkened, and stars falling, among various other forecasts.

Joel 2:31 - The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

Acts 2:19-20 - "And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath...The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come...”

Rev 6:12 - And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sack-cloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

The Prophet Joel was speaking to Judah, and  he said that signs in the sky will foretell the great day of the Lord.  Since the Creation, God made the sun and the moon "for SIGNS and for seasons" (Gen 1:14). The Lord Jesus personally taught that in addition to great earthquakes, famines, and pestilence, there would be "And there shall be signs in the SUN, and in the MOON, and in the STARS," (Luke 21:25).

In our case, the April-15 Red Moon (eclipse) coincided with Jewish holiday of Passover, a pivotal event that commemorates the ancient Israelites’ Exodus from slavery in Egypt.  In fact ALL four blood moons will occur on major Jewish holidays! Thie first blood moon occurs on Passover 2014, followed by the Jewish Feast (holiday of) Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) 2014, then again on Passover 2015 and then again on Sukkot 2015.

This has happened only eight times in all of history! So, think about the spiritual significance of this sign in the sky in your generation for your family & you...

In the past, the rare appearance of four blood moons on these feast days has coincided with major events for Israel and the Jewish people. In each of these blood moons, you have something that begins in tragedy and ends in triumph.

In 1492, Spain expelled the Jews. Columbus also discovered America, which became sort of a safe haven for the Jewish people.

There was also a blood moon on the eve of Israel’s declaration of independence in 1948, following a bloody war that took place only a few years after the Holocaust, when Six Million Jews were murdered! In 1948, Israel was reborn as a nation. After 2,000 years, God supernaturally brought them from 66 nations and a nation was born in a day.

In 1967, after the Six-Day War  Israel recaptured Jerusalem. For the first time in 2,000 years, Jerusalem and the State of Israel were together again.

I repeat, in each of these blood moons, you have something that begins in tragedy and ends in triumph.

What is the Conclusion?

Nobody knows for sure. But perhaps the words of the Jewish Talmud (Jewish Book of Tradition and Commentaries on the Bible) can give us Christians some insight on how we should relate to all possibilities and speculations: “When the Jews perform the will of God, they need not worry about omens [or celestial phenomenon]. Thus says the Lord ‘Do not be frightened by the signs of the heavens.’” (Talmud Sukkah 29a)

We may not comprehend the full significance of these signs, but any way you look at it, it is a sign to look beyond the muddle of daily existence to faithfully live for Jesus, knowing that He is coming soon!
"When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws near," Luke 21:28.

I always loved astronomy....not knowing God at the time, but something always drew me to it. Looking at the universe now I know it's God's handiwork and his mark is all over it. It's a grand painting, painted by him.
